YouTube is Cool.

This week has been pretty dreadful so far, in the way that the second I get home from work, all I want to do is go immediately to bed. I guess that’s what long hours in a tense setting will do to a person, but I think that’s just work in general.

In the spirit of wanting to kick myself into gear with designing, I spent a few hours tonight just browsing informational videos on YouTube. I started by looking for advice on breaking into freelancing, and what I found was actually kind of helpful. One of the videos explained that a lot of getting started is just changing your mindset. Focus on your set of skills and what you’re best at, and work hard towards just that. Also, instead of saying you’re trying to be a designer, take power and proclaim to the world that you are a designer. So, world:

My name is Jessica, and I am a professional screen printer and graphic designer.

Feels kind of nice! ๐Ÿ™‚ I also watched a few videos on techniques in Illustrator, which were surprisingly easy to follow along with. I suppose if I had any doubt in my level of knowledge, I really shouldn’t because most of it I either knew how to already do, or at least understood what was happening. Photoshop, however… I think that’s another story. But that’s for another day!

Then, as YouTube tends to do, I got sidetracked by other videos. If you’re into Jenna Marbles and goofy-looking computer effects, I highly recommend the Photo Booth Tag video. I was actually laughing out loud throughout most of it, and I think it might be a go-to video for when I need to be cheered up. Check it out if you need a giggle!

So that’s about it for now. Until next time! ๐Ÿ˜€

Happy Halloween!

It’s Halloween!

Unfortunately, I was a grinch this year (wrong holiday, I know), and I did not dress up for work. There were some decent, and some terrifying, costumes that my coworkers pulled off, so at least it was enjoyable to witness. I do have some pretty good costume ideas though for next year, so hopefully I will be able to dress up then. We’ll see!

I just wanted to write up a quick post to give you all the update that very little has happened.

There is not much to update you with, solely because I am still in my lazy phase. I still have a lot of choices to make, and subsequently, many different life paths to prepare for. I feel like 2013 is so far less of a year of change, but more a year of preparations for the craziness that is bound to ensue.

I’m still debating trying to get accepted into MCAD next year, but I have some time to work that out. The early acceptance deadline is in January, and school wouldn’t start until the fall of 2014, so there is still time. After the busy season at work settles down, I’ll be able to figure out whether or not I want to go through with that.

That also depends on if I can find a job in the field, and that has not been going spectacularly well. I’m really (not) enjoying the whole “You need 3-5 years of experience to work here, but we won’t let you work here to get that experience, because you don’t have that experience, so you’re shit out of luck” thing. It’s less than great. In either case, I have been working on updating my digital portfolio again, and have switched my hosting site to wix.com. I like the appearance of it so far, as it utilizes HTML5 (I believe?), and I think it should help give me a more professional edge than what I am currently using.

Now, my great wonderful potentially out-of-reach goal is to move to Chicago. Like, in the city, Chicago. Skyscrapers everywhere right outside your window, Chicago. But that comes with a price, and a very, very hefty one at that. I think in a few years, once my loan debt is diminished, and I am able to get that 3-5 years of experience (!), it would actually be attainable. It’s a lofty goal for now, but it’s nice to be hopeful and have my sights set on something to work towards.

So maybe that was a bit more of an update than I originally thought. It was more of the things that are in my head, and less of physical progress, but it still works for me. Even though things are about to ramp up at work, I’m going to try to make more of an active effort to keep things going and moving forward. I’ll be sure to update you all, as things happen. ๐Ÿ™‚

And to bid you a final farewell, I have a treat. I give to you, for your viewing pleasure, a photo of my lovely cat, Sprinklemist. I have dressed her up in a too-small bee outfit, well before it was actually Halloween.

She.
Looks.
GLORIOUS(ly unhappy).

Anyway, I hope you guys are all enjoying buttloads of candy and chocolate, and the sugar crash that is sure to plague you tonight. Happy Halloween!

A New Start

Ok, it’s more of a new idea. I just wanted to make a reference to Arrested Development. ANYWAY!

To make this website a little more entertaining (alright, probably a lot more entertaining), I thought I would start a new weekly project. As my designs have fallen a little into the background, I wanted to bring something fresh to the site.ย I’m ramping up my Pinterest boards, and finding inspiration from a lot of the pins I’m finding. It’s amazing how useful Pinterest can be. You’re immersed in pretty much everything imaginable, and it’s like an information overload that I love to be a part of.

Instead of simply repinning something I like, I tend to actually click through to the home website and look around. If it’s something I think is amazing or inspiring, I’m going to link to it here. I’ll talk a little about why I like it, and what I think makes it great. Post some pictures (and hopefully not get in trouble!), and bring some of the wonderful things I come across, to you.ย I’ll spend part of my week browsing and pinning, and then at the beginning of every week, I’ll try to post about one of the favorite sites I’ve come across. This was something I wanted to do as I started up this site, so I’m pleased that it’s finally going to happen.

In the meantime, I’m finally getting around to the finishing touches of my portfolio site. I’m really proud of the work I’ve put into it, and I’m happy with how it’s turning out. I hope other people will enjoy it as much as I do, and hopefully my future can start falling into place.ย I’m definitely realizing that if you don’t put in any work to make change, nothing is likely to change, and you’ll probably just be stuck in a rut.

Take charge and change your future! Onward we go!

Time for Another Update

Whoops.

It’s clearly been awhile since my last update, huh? I’ve still been busy working on my design portfolio, so that’s taken up a lot of my free time. Although, as of late, I’ve just been lazing around and (re)watching the new season of Arrested Development. Can’t keep all of my Anns in one basket, now can I? Gotta spread out my time between a few things. I have just a few pages left on the website to update, and then it should be pretty much set. I’d like to also get a paper portfolio designed and updated, but I’m thinking it should be easy once I have all of the information in place from the website. Whew.

Other than that, there really hasn’t been a whole lot to update. After my portfolio is finished, things for Ruby July can move forward again, and hopefully some other things in my life will change. I’m gearing up for the month of July, as I hope that’s when things will really begin to come together, so I’m going to use this month to prepare to the best of my ability for change.

I’ll be sure to update as anything new occurs, and hopefully begin posting a little more about personal things, as I had mentioned when I started this blog. I’m getting a lot of inspiration from a girl I used to work with, who is really taking charge of the changes in her life, and turning things around to what she wants to be. She doesn’t know it, but thank you! She took herself out of a static situation that wasn’t providing any growth, and she’s much happier and better off. I can’t wait to do the same!

The Transfer is Complete!

All of my posts from the old site are now over here. Part of me will miss using the old site, mostly just for nostalgic reasons. But the past is the past, and it’s just a blogging site, so onward we go!

In other news, I spent a lot of the past weekend working on my personal design portfolio. I’ve been looking into settling into a real career for awhile now, and that’s one thing I definitely need to get completed before I take any real action.

It brings back a lot of memories from my Web Design class in college, as we had to design something similar for a project. It’s a big undertaking for me, especially in the little time I have available, but it will definitely pay off. Besides, that, it’ll be something for me to be proud of, and fun to look back at the growth throughout my career.

I may post a link to it once it’s complete, so people can go back and forth between sites if they so desire. We shall see…

Switching Over to WordPress…

I’ve been blogging (admittedly not so frequently) through the same site I used when I was in college. Just a random blog, meant to showcase my inner musings and terrible poetry, mostly for myself. It worked great for all of that, however, it doesn’t look like it’s going to work well enough for my Ruby July purposes. Before I get too far into the process of this, I’m just going to switch to WordPress and be done with the old site.

I’m going to transfer over my earlier posts (as soon as I can actually access the site again…grumble), so everything will be right here. I’m really looking forward to seeing what WordPress has to offer, and I’m hoping to expand my knowledge with this blogging platform. I’ve heard good things, and I like the versatility and the room for growth that it offers.

While things are still a little slow on the homefront, I’m going to get things going little by little. As usual, I have a list of things I’d like to get accomplished, and I’ll be checking things off as I can. Gotta take action to see positive changes, so I’m doing what I can! I’m (once again) starting to refocus on Ruby Julyย and improving my own design skill-set, so I can finally do what I want to do, and be who I want to be. I’m done with drifting, and I’m tired of being lazy and unmotivated. It’s still a struggle, as you can probably tell by the constant posting about the same thing, ha! Whoops!

We’ll see how all of that goes, but I’m still looking towards the future and trying to keep positive. I see some people around me starting to make great changes in their lives, and I’m looking to finally do the same. Time to get the ball rolling and make the rest of my life something to be proud of. Here we go!
